Failure to Resolve Distribution Lists When Using Direct Mailer

SYMPTOMS

When using Direct Mailer (DM) you may receive one or more of the following event log messages:

Event ID : 16421
Source : msgbldsvc
Description: Message Builder failed in resolving distribution lists for the mailing "Test email" (GUID: cb36c320-6775-11d3-a15f-00c04f49d56d), the error code is: 0x00000032.

Event ID : 16404
Source : msgbldsvc
Description: Mailing "Test email" failed due to failure in resolving distribution lists. Please check directory server, DS account/password, and network connectivity between message builder and directory server.


CAUSE

This issue may be caused due to the user account that Direct Mail is using to connect to your membership directory is failing its password authentication.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, verify that the Direct Mail user's password is valid using the following steps:

  1. From the Site Server Management Console (MMC), expand the Personalization and Membership (P&M) object.


  2. Expand your server and expand the desired membership instance.


  3. Right-click the Direct Mail component and click Properties.


  4. Click Check Password.


If you receive the following error message, then you need to re-verify the user name and password:
Check Password
Invalid password. Also, make sure that the server and user names that you entered are correct.
