Membership Server Wizard Does Not Display Warning About not Using SQL 7.0 Databases with Numeric Names

ID: Q242596

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Site Server version 3.0
  • Microsoft Site Server version 3.0, Commerce Edition

SYMPTOMS

When creating a new Membership Server instance with Site Server 3.0, Service Pack 2 (SP2), and attempting to use a SQL Server 7.0 database where the database name begins with a numeric character, the following error message appears:

The New Membership Server Wizard has failed to create a new Site Server LDAP Service.
Instead of an error that says that the Membership Server failed, a warning should be instead be displayed by the wizard to prevent you from using a database that begins with a numeric character.

NOTE: Not being able to use a database that begins with a numeric character is by design, in order to provide backwards compatibility to SQL Server 6.5.

WORKAROUND

Use database names in that the first character of the name begins with a letter rather than a number.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Site Server 3.0. For additional information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
