SMS: Client Installation Problems When Using the SMS_LOCAL_DIR Variable

ID: Q242924

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server version 2.0 SP1

SYMPTOMS

When you set the SMS_LOCAL_DIR system variable to define the root folder of an SMS installation (for example, SMS_LOCAL_DIR = C:\PROGRA~1\SMS), the SMS installation does not work.

Ccmbtldr.exe copies two files (Ccmcore.exe and Clicore.exe) in the %SystemRoot%\MS\SMS\Core\Bin folder (the wrong location), and the attempt to start Ccmboot.exe does not succeed.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Systems Management Server service pack that contains this fix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information on support costs, please go to the following address on the World Wide Web:

The English-language version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Date Time Version Size File name Platform
   -------------------------------------------------------------
   09/29/99 03:10a 2.00.1380.1047 394,784 Ccmbtldr.exe i386
   09/29/99 03:18a 2.00.1380.1047 639,760 Ccmbtldr.exe Alpha
NOTE: Due to file dependencies, the most recent hotfix or feature that contains the above files may also contain additional files.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, replace the Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 SP1 version of the Ccmbtldr.exe file with the original SMS 2.0 version.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Systems Management Server version 2.0.
