SMS: "Stop 0x0000000A" with SMS Remote Control Installed

ID: Q245321

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server version 2.0

SYMPTOMS

When you are running System Management Server (SMS) with Remote Control installed, Windows NT may generate the following error message:

Stop 0x0000000A (0x00373039 , 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x8010ab20

CAUSE

This error message occurs when the SMS Remote Control driver (Rchelp.sys) overruns a memory buffer during the loading of the driver.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, remove SMS 2.0 Remote Control. You must remove Remote Control completely; if you simply rename or delete the Rchelp.sys file, SMS reinstalls the file during its regular check of the client once every 30 days.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Systems Management Server version 2.0.

MORE INFORMATION

The Rchelp.sys file is not necessary on versions of Microsoft Windows NT later than Windows NT 4.0 SP2. Microsoft has confirmed that having the Rchelp.sys file installed on these systems is a problem.
