SNA Clients May Experience Slow Response Time with Terminal Server

ID: Q232668

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SNA Server, versions 4.0, 4.0SP1, 4.0SP2

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SUMMARY

Clients connecting to SNA Server through a computer running Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition may experience slow response time.

MORE INFORMATION

If SNA client software is installed on a Terminal Server computer, response time may slow down when more than a certain number of concurrent clients are connected. The slowdown only occurs when clients are using emulation software installed on the Terminal Server computer. There is a registry entry which controls how many threads can be open, thus controlling the number of operations that can be outstanding at any given time.

For example, if the MaxThreads entry is set to decimal value 17, the slow response time occurs when the eighteenth user tries to connect.

To allow more threads to be open, increase the value of the MaxThreads parameter in the registry. This registry entry should be added on the Terminal Server computer, not on the SNA Server.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

  2. Locate the following key in the registry:

  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Lanmanworkstation\parameters
  4. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

  5. Value Name: MaxThreads
    Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0x11 (range is 0-FF hex, but the default is 0x11)
  6. Quit Registry Editor.
