SNARAS Traces Continually Grow in Size If Left Enabled

ID: Q243784

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SNA Server, versions 4.0, 4.0 SP1, 4.0 SP2, 4.0 SP3

SYMPTOMS

When the SNARAS traces are enabled, the trace files %WinntRoot%\System32\Snaras.trc and %WinntRoot%\System32\Rassna.trc will continue to increase in size if you do not disable tracing. Eventually, the files will consume all disk space remaining on the boot partition.

CAUSE

The trace versions of Snaras.dll and Rassna.dll on the SNA Server 4.0 compact disc do not use the same tracing mechanism as the other SNA Server traces. Therefore, there is no limit to how large the files can grow.

WORKAROUND

A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next SNA Server version 4.0 service pack that contains this fix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information on support costs, please go to the following address on the World Wide Web:

http://www.microsoft.com/support/supportnet/overview/overview.asp
The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

   File Name Date Time
   -------------------------------
   Snaras.dll 10/6/99 12:06 PM
   Rassna.dll 10/6/99 12:12 PM

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SNA Server 4.0, 4.0 SP1, 4.0 SP2, and 4.0 SP3.

MORE INFORMATION

The new SNARAS DLL files use the same tracing mechanism as the other tracing options in SNA Server 4.0. To use these new files, please follow the steps below:

  1. Click Start, Programs, and choose Windows NT Explorer.

  2. Browse to the %SnaRoot%\System directory.

  3. Rename SNARAS.DLL to OLDSNARAS.DLL, and RASSNA.DLL to OLDRASSNA.DLL.

  4. Copy the updated SNARAS.DLL and RASSNA.DLL to the %SnaRoot%\System directory.

All SNARAS traces will now be logged in the SNA Application Internal traces (CLIINT1.ATF and CLIINT2.ATF) and the file size will be governed by the Trace File Flip Length on the Tracing Global Properties tab in the SNA Trace Utility.
