PRB: Cannot Register Server in SEM Due to Insufficient Memory

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

SQL Enterprise Manager returns the following error message when you try to register a SQL Server:

Unable to connect to Server (reason: There is insufficient system
memory to run this query). Register anyway?

If the server is registered anyway, any attempt to connect to the server from within SQL Enterprise Manager will result in the following error:

A connection could not be established to <servername> - There is
insufficient system memory to run this query

CAUSE

SQL Server has not been allocated enough memory. In order to use SQL Enterprise Manager to administer SQL Server, the server must have at least 4.5 megabytes of RAM allocated to SQL Server.

WORKAROUND

Use the sp_configure stored procedure to allocate at least 2304 2K pages to SQL Server.
