BUG: DBCC NEWALLOC May Cause AV When Extent Chain Corrupt

SYMPTOMS

In cases where a corrupt extent chain exists in the database, a DBCC NEWALLOC command may stop execution when checking the corrupted object with an access violation in language_exec.

After this happens, the only way to stop the server is through a SHUTDOWN WITH NOWAIT command.


WORKAROUND

Since the problem indicates serious damage of your database, you must reload your database from the latest dump.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server versions 4.2x and 6.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
