FIX: WAITFOR Variable in Stored Proc May Cause Handled AV

SYMPTOMS

Using the WAITFOR command in a stored procedure where the delay is specified as a DATETIME variable may cause a handled access violation.


CAUSE

Using a variable with the WAITFOR command in this manner is not defined in the SQL Server documentation. However, the same command and variable used outside a stored procedure works fine.


WORKAROUND

Parse the command into a string and use the EXEC facility to implement the WAITFOR.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0. For more information, contact your primary support provider.
