FIX: Syntax Error on Negative Parm Value in Grouped Procedure

ID: Q145644

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0

BUG# NT: 12091 (6.00)

SYMPTOMS

If a stored procedure that has an integer parameter and is a member of a stored procedure group attempts to execute the procedure that provides a negative value for the parameter:

execute test_proc;2 -1234

then an invalid syntax error occurs:
Msg 170, Level 15, State 1 Line 3: Incorrect syntax near '1234'.

WORKAROUND

DB-library applications will not receive the error if they execute the procedure as an RPC using dbrpcsend().

The Microsoft SQL Server ODBC driver will also execute the procedure as an RPC if the application executes the procedure using an ODBC call escape clause:

   SQLExecDirect(hstmt, "{ call test_proc;2 (-1234) }", SQL_NTS);

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0. For more information, contact your primary support provider.
