FIX: Multiplying Numeric Datatypes May Yield Lower Precision

ID: Q163069

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5

BUG #: 16460 (SQL6.5)

SYMPTOMS

When you multiply two highly precise numeric datatypes, you may not receive the expected precision in the result. For example, consider the following statements:

   declare @num1 numeric(28,8),@num2 numeric(28,8),@num3 numeric(28,8)
   select @num1=1.0,@num2=0.12345678
   select @num3=@num1*@num2
   select @num3
These statements return a value of 0.12345600, but they should return a value of 0.12345678.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 6.5. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 5a for Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5. For information about downloading and installing the latest SQL Server Service Pack, see http://support.microsoft.com/support/sql/.
