SUMMARYStarting with SQL Server version 6.5 Service Pack 3, during a DUMP DATABASE to a disk file on an NTFS partition, the dump file size is not updated until the end of the dump operation. However, the file size is continuously updated for dumps to files on FAT partitions. MORE INFORMATION
This is a side effect of SQL Server opening disk dump files with the
FILE_FLAG_WRITE_THROUGH flag, which was changed to improve dump
performance.
