PRB: SVS Will Not Report as Online Without Named Pipes

ID: Q189342

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SQL Server, Enterprise Edition, version 6.5

SYMPTOMS

When starting the Symmetric Virtual Server (SVS) in Cluster Administrator, the resource will not report a state of Online, but will instead continually restart and get stuck in the Online Pending state.

CAUSE

The SQL Server Resource DLL reports the state of the SVS. To do so, it must connect to the SVS over the default Named Pipe of \\.\pipe\sql\query.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the SVS to make sure that it listens to the default Named Pipe. To do this, perform the steps in the WORKAROUND section of the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q189037 : BUG: SQL Setup Doesn't Change Security and Network Support w/SVS

MORE INFORMATION

Setting up sqlserver to not listen on the default named pipes is not recommended because other sqlserver components, such as extended stored procedures and setup, use the default pipe and can fail if it becomes unavailable.
