SUMMARY

This article describes the general requirements and steps for installing SQL Server 6.5.

WARNING: Failure to install the programs in the order listed in this article might cause the software products to fail on installation, or require that you reformat the disk and restart the installation.

NOTE: SQL Server 6.5 can only be installed on Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 or later, SQL 6.5 Service Pack 5a is required for Windows 2000 installations. Only the client utilities for SQL Server 6.5 can be installed on a Windows 95 or Windows 98 computer. You cannot install the server components on these operating systems.

MORE INFORMATION

Install services in the following order:

Order of Installation using Windows NT 4.0 Server or Enterprise Edition, Non-clustered

  1. Install Windows NT along with all necessary Windows NT services, protocols, and network adapters.

TIP: If your computer is not connected and logged on to a network and you are using Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0, you need to install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter. Your Windows NT installation compact disc and the latest Windows NT Service Pack (if installed) is required. To install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter under Windows NT 4.0, do the following:

    1. Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon and click Properties, or double-click Network in Control Panel.

    2. On the Network Properties page, click the Adapters tab, and then click Add.

    3. Select MS Loopback Adapter from the list and click OK.

    4. Accept the defaults.

To install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter under Windows NT 3.x, follow these steps:

    1. In Control Panel, double-click the Network icon.

    2. Click Add Adapter.

    3. Select MS Loopback Adapter and then click Continue.

    4. Accept the defaults.

  2. If you are using the IPX/SPX protocol, accept the default frame type of 802.3. For TCP/IP configurations, you should specify an IP address of 10.10.10.1 and a subnet address of 255.255.255.0. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click No.

  3. Clear the event logs, restart the computer, and log in using an Administrator account. If the computer is on a network and is a member server, verify that this account is a member of the local Administrators group.

  4. Verify that the Windows NT event logs are empty except for normal service startups.

CAUTION: ALL OTHER ERRORS OR MESSAGES CONCERNING FAILURES OR OTHER PROBLEMS SHOULD BE RESOLVED BEFORE CONTINUING.

Internet Explorer

If needed, or if you plan to use it in the future, install Internet Explorer 4.0. If you do not already have a copy, you can obtain one by going to the following Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie
You can also get it from the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 compact disc, which you can order from the following Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/nt4svcpk4/ordercd.asp

Conflicting Services

To avoid possible conflicts with files in use during installation, you should only have these services running while installing SQL Server:
  • Alerter

  • Computer Browser

  • Event Log

  • License Logging Service

  • Messenger

  • NetBIOS Helper

  • Net Logon

  • NT LM Security Support Provider

  • Plug and Play

  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator

  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service

  • Server

  • Spooler

  • TCP/IP

  • Workstation

If any other services are started, they must be stopped before installing SQL Server or setup may fail, with the exception of those required by the hardware manufacturer.

SQL Server 6.5

To begin installing SQL Server 6.5, run Setup.exe from the correct directory on the SQL Server 6.5 compact disc. If you are using BackOffice, start the Install Wizard. During the installation, choose the default settings, unless you have a specific reason for changing them. When you install SQL Server onto a computer running Windows NT Workstation, choose for the services to start under the Local System Account instead of assigning a user account.

Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack

Install Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, choosing the options required. If you have a compact disc for Option Pack 4.0 or have downloaded it from the Web site, be sure you have the correct version for Windows NT Workstation or Server.

SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 5a

Install SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 5a, which is available from the following Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/sql/content/spack.asp

Windows NT Service Pack 4

Install the Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack. When installing the service pack make sure you select to create an uninstall directory and use the Year 2000 setup from the CD-ROM. This can be done by selecting to install from the choice in the frame on the right side of the screen that appears when the compact disk auto runs.

NOTE: Prior to installing Windows NT Service Packs, it is recommended that you verify your current Windows NT Service Pack uninstall directory has been renamed. It is recommended that you rename the hidden directory, $NTServicePackUninstall$, to $NTServicePackUninstall$.SP4 and then rename it again after installing any future Service Packs, by adding .SPx as the extension, where x is the Service Pack number. This way you have uninstall directories available, should you need them. This also prevents the directories from being accidentally overwritten.

The Windows NT Service Pack 4 files are available from the following Web site although it is recommended that you contact Microsoft and request the Windows NT Service Pack 4 CD-ROM:

http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/NT4SvcPk4/NT4SvcPk4.asp

Current Windows NT Service Pack

Install the current Windows NT Service Pack 5, which is available from the following Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/Support/NTServer/Content/ServicePacks/Default.asp

Additional Server-Based Applications

Install any additional server-based products before installing any user applications. For further information, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Order of Installation using Windows 2000 Overview

  1. Install Windows 2000 RC3 or later, accepting the default application choices.

    2. Logon as a service.

    3. Logon locally.

    4. This account must be part of the Local Administrators Group

NOTE: This requires a Domain Administrators account to set up the domain policy. For assistance, refer to "Windows 2000 Group Policy Scenarios" at:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/server/Technical/management/GroupPolicyIntro.asp
