PRB: Non-Windows NT Administrators May Not See or Save SQLTrace Filters

SYMPTOMS

Windows NT users who are not members of built-in Local Administrators group cannot see existing SQLTrace filters when running SQL Trace (Sqltrace.exe). Users can connect and create new filters, but those filters are not saved and are therefore only available for the duration of the connection.

WORKAROUND

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To give a user account permissions to see existing trace filters and save new filters, grant Read access to the following key of the SQL Server:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers
   \Winreg
