FIX: Handled Access Violation Caused by Mac Client and SQL Trace

• Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5

SYMPTOMS

Using SQL Server 6.5 on Windows NT Server 4.0, an Apple Macintosh client running a query against SQL Server causes a stack dump, at which point SQL Server shuts down.

This only occurs when running a pre or post remote procedure call (RPC) event handler, such as SQL Trace, on the server before the client connects.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, avoid using any pre or post handler like SQL Trace with Macintosh clients.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server version 6.5. This problem has been corrected in U.S. Service Pack 5a for Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5. For information about downloading and installing the latest SQL Server Service Pack, see http://support.microsoft.com/support/sql/.
