BUG: Installing OLAP Services in Root Causes Permissions Error When Connecting Remotely

SYMPTOMS

If OLAP Services is installed in the root directory (such as C:\) the user gets an error message when registering/connecting to the OLAP server from a remote computer. The error message is:

Error occurred while connecting to 'servername'
Your permissions on the server computer do not allow you to administer this OLAP server.
Error: Path/File access error
Do you still want to register this server?


CAUSE

This error is caused by incorrect information placed in the registry during the installation process.


WORKAROUND

Install OLAP services in the default path (..\Program Files\OLAP Services). Note that the data directory can be placed anywhere (even under the root folder or a different drive). It does not have to be under OLAP Services.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server OLAP Services version 7.0.
