BUG: Error Creating Data Source Name (DSN) in OLAP Manager

SYMPTOMS

While trying to create a data source in OLAP Manager, the data source is not created and the following error message occurs:

Server initializing Data Source 'ODBC-Default Dir=D temp;Driver=Microsoft..'
The error message displays when all of the following are true:
  • When a new data source with provider as "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers" is being defined.


  • A connection string is used to specify the source of data.


  • The initial catalog is not specified.



WORKAROUND

You can use either one of the following two workarounds:

  • Specify a value for the initial catalog field.

    -or-


  • Use the data source name instead of the connection string in the connection tab.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SQL Server OLAP Services version 7.0.
