PRB: PreBuildServer Error During SQL 7.0 Setup

SYMPTOMS

Near the end of setup, the following error message may appear and the InstallShield setup may stop responding:

Unable to create the registry set: PreBuild Server
This problem only occurs when:
  • The computer on which setup is being performed has had a previous version of SQL Server installed.


  • The default registry permissions have changed.



CAUSE

Setup for SQL Server 7.0 detects that an earlier version of SQL Server has been installed and attempts to copy the registry keys that store the configuration information for the previous version. If the account you are using to install SQL Server 7.0 does not have the appropriate permissions on these registry keys, this error will be displayed.


WORKAROUND

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

  1. Log into Windows NT using the local Administrator account.


  2. Run RegEdt32.exe.


  3. Check the registry permissions on the following keys by highlighting the key in the left-hand pane and selecting Permissions from the Security drop-down menu:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\MSSQLServer

    The Administrators local group should have Full Control on both keys. If it does not, grant the Full Control permission by clicking the Add button.


  4. Reinstall SQL Server 7.0.
