INF: Fixed-Length Versus Variable-Length Index Entries

ID: Q45644

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SQL Server for OS/2, version 4.2

If a variable-length field is indexed, the data portion of index entries is stored in a format that is similar to data rows. Fixed parts are stored in the fixed-length portion of the row. Variable-length parts are stored in the variable-length portion of the row, following the row length, which follows the fixed portion of the row if variable-length parts are present.
