Incoming Msg Hangs Networking Client (LM 2.2a) w/ TCP/IP

ID: Q111029

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, version 2.2a

SYMPTOMS

The networking client (LAN Manager 2.2a) software that is distributed free to purchasers of NT sometimes hangs when the client is running TCP/IP as the only protocol and receives a Print Manager or Alerter message. A hard reset is required.

CAUSE

The client often hangs if:

  • the client sends a print job and the printer sends a message back to the client

  • the user logging on is in the alerter line of the server and receives an alert message

The hang results when the client receives a message while it is busy processing a network request.

WORKAROUND

Remove the messenger service or use another protocol (for example, NetBEUI).

STATUS

Microsoft has determined this to be a problem in the Microsoft Networking Client version 2.2a . We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

TO DUPLICATE BEHAVIOR

Logon from the client in a loop (for example: user1) and at the same time send messages to the user from the server or any other workstation in a loop(for example: net send user1 "message").

Notice that after one or two messages, the workstation hangs.
