RESOLVED: Hotsite: OS/2 2.x Reboot Hang with NetBIOS 3.0

ID: Q111550

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, version 2.2b

SYMPTOMS

When you install NetBIOS 3.0 support with the LAN Manager 2.2b client software on an OS/2 2.x machine, the machine hangs hard when the system tries to load the drivers in the CONFIG.SYS file.

CAUSE

There is a resource problem with NETWKSTA and a problem loading NetBIOS support on cards that don't directly support it. NETWKSTA attempts to allocate resources to a certain level. When it cannot, it hangs the machine.

WORKAROUND

  1. After running Setup and before rebooting, go to the bottom of CONFIG.SYS and find this statement: C:\< LANMAN INSTALL DIRECTORY > \ NETPROG\NETBIOS.OS2

  2. Change to: C:\< LANMAN INSTALL DIRECTORY > \ NETPROG\NETBIOS.OS2 /N

The /N switch tells NETWKSTA to ignore the resource limitation and load NetBIOS 3.0 support.

STATUS

Resolved by means of the workaround.

STEPS TO DUPLICATE BEHAVIOR

  1. Install OS/2 2.1 and the LAN Manager 2.2b OS/2 client.

  2. In setup, choose Configuration, then Workstation Settings. Select NetBIOS 3.0 support.

  3. Reboot. Notice that the machine hangs while going through CONFIG.SYS.
