Printing via TCP/IP Kills LAN Manager 2.2b MS-DOS Client

ID: Q112197

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, version 2.2b

SYMPTOMS

After installing a LAN Manager 2.2b MS-DOS enhanced workstation, all attempts to print to a network printer by means of TCP/IP from either MS-DOS or Windows 3.1 crash the machine.

Printing from within Windows 3.1 drops you from Windows to either the MS-DOS prompt or an unresponsive black screen. Printing from MS-DOS hangs the machine totally. Ctrl+Alt+Del may not be recognized, and a hard reboot may be required.

CAUSE

An optimization in TCP/IP causes a send to return to the caller, Messenger, too quickly during the receipt of print job notification.

RESOLUTION

TCPTSR.EXE has been modified to address this problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft LAN Manager version 2.2b. The problem is fixed in CSD00.087. Contact Microsoft Product Support Services for more information.
