Open File with FCB Fails on HPFS Partition

ID: Q119013

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, version 2.2b

SYMPTOMS

If an MS-DOS LAN Manager 2.2b workstation tries to open a file on a LAN Manager 2.2b HPFS partition using the "Open file with FCB" Function 0Fh and the file pathname is 42 characters long, the client receives this error message:

General failure reading drive X
Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail?

CAUSE

If a file doesn't exist, the file system should return the "File not found" error message to the client. In this case, the HPFS file system is returning an invalid message because the HPFS file system maps to the wrong error message when the pathname is 42 characters long.

WORKAROUND

Use a FAT partition on the server or use the "Create file with FCB"

Function 16h.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in LAN Manager version2.2b. A fix to this problem is in development, but has not been regression-tested and may be destabilizing in production environments. Microsoft does not recommend implementing this fix at this time. Contact Microsoft Product Support Services for more information on the availability of this fix.
