Troubleshooting LAN Manager Trap Screens for OS/2 Version 1.3

ID: Q139450

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, versions 2.0b, 2.2

SUMMARY

This article provides basic troubleshooting tips for resolving traps when running OS/2 version 1.3 and LAN Manager 2.2.

MORE INFORMATION

A trap is an error condition detected by the central processing unit (CPU) after the execution of a software instruction. Traps that occur in the OS/2 operating system are not defined by OS/2, but by Intel, the designer of the microprocessor that OS/2 was designed for. The most comprehensive documentation on traps is the Intel manual for the 80x86 which details traps and their causes.

Quick Fixes for Trap Screens

  • Uninstall the application or hardware that was just installed.

  • Replace the hardware that is failing.

  • Install the LAN Manager 2.2b patch available from ftp.microsoft.com, at \\ftp\data\softlib\mslfiles\lm22b.exe

  • If the LAN Manager 2.2c files were just installed, remove them because they are for LAN Manager clients only.

Information From Trap Screens To Collect

From the example trap screen below:
TRAP 000D

collect the following data:

  • Trap: D

  • CS: 0A80

  • IP: 0057

  • CSLIM: 17A4

  • Internal Processing error: 0228:37CD

  • Any file referenced: ELNK3$

Example KB Searches

Basically, use combinations of AND and OR on the above information that you collected from the trap screen. For example:

  • trap D 0A80 0057 17A4 0228:37CD

  • trap D 0A80 0057 17A4

  • trap D 0A80 or 0057 or 17A4 0228:37CD

  • trap D 0A80 or 0057 or 17A4 0228:37CD ENLK3$

  • trap D 0A80 or 0057 or 17A4 0228:37CD or ELNK3$

  • trap D 0A80 or 0057 or 17A4 or 0228:37CD or ELNK3$

Notes on Trap Screens

  • Start with the first KB search example, then broaden searches as necessary.

  • Usually the problem can be fixed with upgraded LAN Manager files, replacing the network card, or from removing the application or hardware that was just installed on the server.
