Cannot Read from File Pcntnd.dos, Error Code 3

ID: Q155377

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, version 2.2c

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the latest MS-DOS NDIS driver for the Compaq PCNet PCI Ethernet Adapter, you may get the following error:

Cannot read from file PCNTND.DOS, Error code 3

CAUSE

The error is caused by a typo in the Pcntnd.nif file found in the A:\CPQNET\MSLANMAN.DOS\DRIVERS\NIF directory.

The example below illustrates how the file should read to work correctly:

   Model = PCNet Family Ethernet Adapter
   Path            = ETHERNET\NDIS
   DeviceDriver    = PCNTND.DOS
   DeviceName      = PCNTND
   Type            = NDIS
   XPorts          = NETBEUI
The change is made to the "Path" line which, from Compaq, incorrectly reads: ETHERNET\PCNTND.

For additional information on another mistake in this driver disk, which incorrectly names the directory Mslanman.dos as MSLANMAN, resulting in an error trying to install the driver, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
