PRB: Upgrading SQL Server 6.5 to the MTS 2.0 DTC Release

ID: Q192680

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Transaction Server 2.0
  • Microsoft SQL Server version 6.5

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (DTC) has been updated for the Microsoft Transaction Server 2.0 release that is part of the Windows NT Option Pack. If you have installed the SQL Server 6.5 release but you have not installed the Windows NT Option Pack, you may experience problems related to the interactions between the versions or you may encounter a bug or problem that is corrected in the new release of DTC.

RESOLUTION

Installing the Windows NT Option Pack is the recommended method for obtaining the updated Distributed Transaction Coordinator components.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem and where the preceding workaround is unacceptable. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information.

Do not use this hotfix to install the Distributed Transaction Coordinator on a Windows NT Microsoft Cluster Server system or on a Windows 95 system. To upgrade Microsoft DTC on a cluster system or Windows 95 system, you must install the Windows NT Option Pack. The Windows NT Option Pack setup program has been enhanced to work with clusters and Windows 95.
