OS/2 LAN Manager 386 Won't Install into D: \LANMAN.RC2D

SUMMARY

On a machine where drive C is formatted for a FAT file system and drive D is formatted for an HPFS, if you try to install OS/2 LAN Manager into the D:\LANMAN.RC2D directory, the Setup program attempts to do this even though it is not possible.

This shouldn't be possible because during installation the Setup program must put the HPFS.386 IFS file on drive C into the C:\LANMAN.RC2D directory. "LANMAN.RC2D" is not considered a legal directory name for drive C because it does not conform to the FAT limitations of an 8.3 filename.

At the end of the installation, the computer displays error 206

-- cannot create the hpfs.386 file.

When you reboot the system, OS/2 hangs because C:\LANMAN.RC2D is first on the path.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in OS/2 LAN Manager versions 2.0, 2.1, 2.1a, and 2.2. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
