MS-DOS/OS/2 LAN Man 2.x 3Com 3+Open 1.1 Interoperability

ID: Q65203

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, version 2.0

SUMMARY

The information listed below applies to both OS/2 and DOS LAN Manager versions 2.0, 2.1, 2.1a, and 2.2.

The current version of 3Com's OS/2 network operating system is 3+Open version 1.1, based on Microsoft DOS / OS/2 LAN Manager version 1.01. In order for a session to be established between a 3+Open 1.1 network node (server or workstation) and a Microsoft DOS / OS/2 LAN Manager version 2.x network node, both nodes must be configured to use the same transport protocol.

Microsoft MS-DOS / OS/2 LAN Manager versions 2.x include the NetBEUI 2.x transport protocol.

3+Open 1.1 includes the following transport protocols:

NBP
3Com XNS*
DLC
Madge NetBEUI [MNETB] (requires DLC)
* On a DOS workstation, 3Com's XNS can be installed as a full protocol, or can be "demand loaded" via 3Com's Demand Protocol Architecture. The demand loaded version cannot be used as a transport for DOS / OS/2 LAN Manager. It is mainly used to allow primary NBP transport users to access 3Com's XNS based mail and internet services.

The following is a list of options for transport protocol matching to allow interconnection between 3+Open 1.1 and DOS / OS/2 LAN Manager version 2.x nodes:

  1. Using NetBEUI on the MS-DOS / OS/2 LAN Manager nodes and MNETB on the 3+Open nodes

    • Undesirable for 3+Open DOS workstation users in that MNETB, along with the required DLC layer, takes up a considerably large amount of RAM (67K more than NBP) and is quite slow.

    • Necessitates support of two different NetBEUI transport implementations.

  2. NBP on all nodes

    • NBP is NOT compatible with NetBEUI. NetBEUI is a standard transport in Microsoft DOS / OS/2 LAN Manager version 2.x, and in most OEM (original equipment manufacturer) DOS / OS/2 LAN Manager implementations (ATT, NCR, IBM, etc.). It is easier for Microsoft and its OEMs to support NetBEUI.

    • You may need to obtain permission from 3Com to use NBP as a primary transport on DOS / OS/2 LAN Manager version 2.x.

    • The DOS NBP that is included with 3+Open 1.1 will work with DOS LAN Manager version 2.x. However, the OS/2 NBP included with 3+Open 1.1 WILL NOT work with OS/2 LAN Manager version 2.x. You are required to use the OS/2 version 1.21 compatible version of NBP.

    • DOS NBP uses 13K to 14K less RAM than NetBEUI.

  3. Using NetBEUI on all nodes

    • Sanctioned and supported by Microsoft.

    • Maintains transport compatibility with most current and future OEM implementations.

    • Microsoft LAN Manager development reports that internal testing shows that NetBEUI 2.x is slightly faster than NBP.

    • Works properly with 3+Open 1.1 demand loaded XNS.

  4. Using mixed NBP and NetBEUI

    Install NBP (OS/2 version 1.21 compatible version), in addition to NetBEUI, on all OS/2 LAN Manager version 2.x servers leaving NBP on 3+Open 1.1 workstations and NetBEUI on OS/2 LAN Manager version 2.x workstations.

    -or-

    Install NetBEUI, in addition to NBP, on all 3+Open 1.1 servers, leaving NBP on 3+Open 1.1 workstations and NetBEUI on OS/2 LAN Manager version 2.x workstations.

    • All workstations could communicate with all servers, but OS/2 LAN Manager version 2.x workstations could not communicate with 3+Open 1.1 workstations.

Listed below are the procedures for installing NetBEUI on 3+Open 1.1 nodes that have been previously configured with NBP, or NBP with XNS.

On a 3+Open DOS Enhanced Workstation, do the following:

  1. Remove the NBP line from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

  2. In the CONFIG.SYS file, add the following line after the MAC driver device line:

          DEVICE=C:\3OPEN\DOSWKSTA\LANMAN\DRIVERS\NETBEUI.DOS

  3. Copy NETBEUI.DOS into the C:\3OPEN\DOSWKSTA\LANMAN\DRIVERS subdirectory. You can find NETBEUI.DOS in a DOS LAN Manager version 2.x workstation's LANMAN.DOS\DRIVERS\PROTOCOL\NETBEUI directory.

  4. Edit the PROTOCOL.INI file. Since there is already a [NETBEUI] section for MNETB, add a new section with a new name. For example:

          [NETBEUI2]
             DRIVER = NETBEUI$
             BINDINGS = ETHERLINKII
    * BINDINGS should be the same as BINDINGS in the [NBP] section.

  5. Reboot the workstation.

On a 3+Open OS/2 workstation or server, do the following:

  1. In the CONFIG.SYS file, add the following line after the MAC driver device line:

          DEVICE=C:\3OPEN\SERVER\LANMAN\DRIVERS\NETBEUI.OS2

  2. Copy NETBEUI.OS2 into the C:\3OPEN\SERVER\LANMAN\DRIVERS subdirectory. You can find NETBEUI.OS2 in an OS/2 LAN Manager version 2.x workstation's LANMAN\DRIVERS\PROTOCOL\NETBEUI subdirectory.

  3. Edit the LANMAN.INI [networks] section. Add the following line (where X = next available net number):
    netX = netbeui$,0

  4. Edit the PROTOCOL.INI file. Since there is already a [NETBEUI] section for MNETB, add a new section with a new name. For example:

          [NETBEUI2]
             DRIVER = NETBEUI$
             BINDINGS = ETHERLINKII
    * BINDINGS should be the same as BINDINGS in the [NBP] section.

  5. Shut down and reboot the workstation/server.

Interadminability

A 3+Open 1.1 server can be fully administered from an MS-DOS / OS/2 LAN Manager version 2.x workstation via the command line or the NIF. Supported administrative functions are the same as in MS-DOS / OS/2 LAN Manager version 1.01.
