Page 84 of the Microsoft FORTRAN version 5.1 Reference Manual states that
the "backslash edit descriptor is used only for formatted output to
terminal devices, such as the screen or printer. It is ignored in all other
situations."
CAUSEVersion 5.1 of the Microsoft FORTRAN compiler extends the use of the backslash edit descriptor to file I/O in addition to device I/O. This change should be reflected on pages 84 and 97 of the Microsoft FORTRAN version 5.1 Reference Manual, in addition to Appendix B of the Reference Manual: Changes from Version 5.0 to Version 5.1.
