DOCERR: Backslash Edit Descriptor With File I/O, Version 5.1

SYMPTOMS

Page 84 of the Microsoft FORTRAN version 5.1 Reference Manual states that the "backslash edit descriptor is used only for formatted output to terminal devices, such as the screen or printer. It is ignored in all other situations."

However, page 97 of the Microsoft FORTRAN version 5.1 Reference Manual describes how "if the device is the screen, you can use the backslash (\) edit descriptor to suppress the end-of-record."

CAUSE

Version 5.1 of the Microsoft FORTRAN compiler extends the use of the backslash edit descriptor to file I/O in addition to device I/O. This change should be reflected on pages 84 and 97 of the Microsoft FORTRAN version 5.1 Reference Manual, in addition to Appendix B of the Reference Manual: Changes from Version 5.0 to Version 5.1.
