Installing the SNMP Agents on a 3Com Server

ID: Q87663

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, version 2.1

SUMMARY

The installation program for the SNMP Agents will not allow itself to be installed on a 3Com 3Server (a headless server). This is because the installation program asks Microsoft LAN Manager for the LANROOT rather than prompting you for the path. Directions for remote installation follow:

To install the installation program manually, add the following lines to the LANMAN.INI file:

   [snmp]
   trapcommunity = public
   trapdestinations = H:11.1.5.87
   communitynames = public
   hostmasks = H:0.0.0.0:00000000
   authtrap = on
   version = SnmpAgent_1.0

   [services]
   snmp = services\snmp.exe
The entries in the [snmp] section can be adjusted as needed. For more information on these options, see pages 409 and 410 of the "Microsoft LAN Manager Administrator's Guide."

The files on the NetView and SNMP Agents disk in the SNMP subdirectory must be copied into the following directories:

  \lanman\netlib
           inetmib1.dll
           lmmib2.dll

   \lanman\services
           snmp.exe

   \lanman\netprog
           nmconfig.exe
           nmconfig.inf
           snmp.msg
"Net start snmp" can then be added to the STARTUP.CMD file, or the snmp service can be added to the SRVSERVICES entry in the [server] section of the LANMAN.INI file so that SNMP will start automatically.
