Microsoft LAN Manager, version 2.1
SUMMARY
Note that this article reflects the text of a static document. Therefore,
some of the information in this article may be outdated. For example, as
of May 20, 1996, Microsoft no longer maintains support forums on
CompuServe.
Below is a list of errors in the release notes for Microsoft LAN
Manager version 2.1 for 3Com 3Servers:
- 3Com LocalTalk Port
The release notes state on the first page that "The 3SALAP
driver... is available on Microsoft CompuServe Forum." This driver
is NOT available on CompuServe. It was decided that this driver was
not reliable enough for general release by Microsoft. This file can
be obtained from Microsoft PSS LAN Manager Support. In addition,
the 3SALAP driver is not supported by Microsoft. See the text file
in the Library section on CompuServe for further information.
- Supporting an AST 4 Port Serial Adapter
The release notes refer to "COM4-COM6" on an AST 4-Port adapter.
This should read "COM5-COM8."
- Step 2 in Section 7 of the "Installation and Configuration Guide
for the 3Server" asks that you "modify the 3Server's
CONFIG.SYS file to remove the REM statement from one of the
following lines: "
REM DEVICE = C:\OS2\COM01.400 /I:5
REM DEVICE = C:\OS2\COM01.500 /I:5
The drivers are actually named COM01S.400 and COM01S.500. The
"S" was left out of the drivername in the notes. The COM01S.500
driver should also be used for 3S600 series 3Servers.
- Replacing PMSPL.DLL for Use with MS OS/2 1.3 Workstations
The notes say to contact Microsoft Product Support to get an
updated version. The corrected file can also be downloaded from the
Microsoft Network forum on CompuServe and from the Microsoft
Download Service (MSDL) LAN Manager Section. The number for the
MSDL is (425) 936-6735.
This file must be installed on the local workstation or PC server,
not the 3Server running LAN Manager.
Here are the instructions for installing PMSPL.DLL:
- Boot your OS/2 workstation with an OS/2 1.31 installation disk.
- At the command prompt, type the following, then press ENTER:
RENAME C:\OS2\DLL\PMSPL.DLL C:\OS2\DLL\PMSPL.OLD
- At the command prompt, type the following (assuming your new
PMSPL.DLL file is on a disk in drive A), then press ENTER:
COPY A:\PMSPL.DLL C:\OS2\DLL
