RAS Hides Windows for Workgroups/LAN Manager Servers

ID: Q96438

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, version 2.1

SUMMARY

PROBLEM ID: BUG# 1072

SYMPTOMS

When using Windows for Workgroups (WfW) 3.1 and Remote Access Service (RAS) 1.1, you may not be able to view WfW or LAN Manager servers from the WfW File Manager Browse tool bar or the Connect Network Drive command in File Manager.

CAUSE

Disabling RAS from the WfW Control Panel does not set MaintainServerList back to its original value, either Auto or Yes.

When RAS is enabled in the WfW Control Panel, it sets the SYSTEM.INI file to improve WfW performance as follows:

      [Network]

      MaintainServerList=No
Unless there is an on-the-net WfW server in your workgroup with MaintainServerList=[Auto|Yes], there will not be a BrowseMaster to supply a server list to WfW clients. This will result in an empty list of servers from Connect Network Drive of File Manager.

Also, unless one of these on-the-net BrowseMasters is in your LAN Manager domain, you won't see LAN Manager servers either. You should still be able to access servers by entering the servername and sharepoint manually.

RESOLUTION

In the SYSTEM.INI file, make the following change:

      [Network]

      MaintainServerList=[Auto | Yes]

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in RAS version 1.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
