Update of NET.EXE for MS-DLC in Windows for Workgroups

ID: Q96792

SUMMARY

When using MSDLC.EXE with Windows for Workgroups (WfW) 3.1 clients, the real mode redirector (NET.EXE) included with WfW 3.1 does not pass DLC packets to the MS-DLC protocol stack.

MORE INFORMATION

If you start Windows before starting the redirector, the protected mode redirector is used. If the redirector is started before Windows (that is, "net start workstation" or "net start rdr"), the real mode redirector is used. NetBEUI from the real mode redirector does not pass DLC packets to the MS-DLC protocol stack. There is an updated NET.EXE on the Windows for Workgroups Connectivity disk shipped with LAN Manager 2.2.

To upgrade an existing WfW client, first remove the MS-DLC protocol. Remove any references to the protocol in AUTOEXEC.BAT and \WINDOWS\PROTOCOL.INI.

Now upgrade the WfW client using the following procedure:

  1. From the Control Panel select (in order):

    • Network

    • Adapters

    • Setup

    • Protocols

  2. Select Unlisted or Updated Protocol, then choose the Add button.

  3. You will be prompted to insert an "Unlisted, Updated or Vendor provided disk." Insert the Windows for Workgroups Connectivity disk included with LAN Manager 2.2, enter the correct drive letter, and press ENTER.

Both the protocol MSDLC.EXE and the file NET.EXE will be installed from the disk, and will take effect when you restart the system.

In addition to the changes made automatically by the WfW, make sure the following two lines are in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI:

   [386Enh] section:

   v86modelanas=0
   (value must equal lana assigned in PROTOCOL.INI)

   [network] section:

   exclude=0
   (value must equal lana assigned in PROTOCOL.INI)
