System Error Sharing DBF on LAN Man/Windows for Workgroup

SYMPTOMS

On a Windows for Workgroups (WFWG) workstation, if you access a FoxPro database that is larger than 2000 bytes, located on the FAT formatted boot partition of a LAN Manager server, the error message:

System error...Network error on drive x
appears if:
A LAN Manager workstation has accessed the database first and then you attempt to access the same database

-or-

Another WFWG workstation has accessed the database first, and then you attempt to access the same database.


CAUSE

The LAN Manager server incorrectly responds to the WFWG request to access the database file with a message that is too long, resulting in a NetBIOS error.


RESOLUTION

The LAN Manager file, NETSERVR.EXE, has been updated to correct this problem.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in LAN Manager version 2.2. This problem was corrected in the LAN Manager 2.2b Patch. For information on obtaining the Patch, query on the following word in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
