SUMMARY
Print jobs from PageMaker 4.2 (Macintosh side) may disappear rather
than printing on a printer attached to a LAN Manager server running
the Macintosh Service release 1.0a. This happens because the
Macintosh Service does not have the PREP file with the PostScript
subroutines the jobs require. To fix this, guarantee that the
Macintosh Service caches the appropriate PREP file for PageMaker
print jobs. A procedure for this is described below in the RESOLUTION
section.
SYMPTOMSThe print jobs spool correctly to the queue, display printing status, then disappear. CAUSE
Every version of the Macintosh operating system has its own PREP
file that is identified by a version number (5.2, 6.0, 7.0, and so
on) that is visible in the top right corner of the print dialog.
LAN Manager Macintosh Service does NOT have its own version of the
PREP files, so it caches the different versions of the PREP files
the first time it encounters them and subsequently replies that it
has them and the client does not need to download them again. When
the Macintosh prints directly to a printer, it makes these PREP
files permanent on the printer until a power cycle or a reset.
RESOLUTIONTo guarantee that the Macintosh Service caches the appropriate PREP file for the PageMaker print jobs, stop MacPrint and restart it to clear the cache. You may also have to ensure that the first print job sent to the LAN Manager server is from PageMaker 4.2 (or the Macintosh application that has problems printing).
