Stacker 2.0 Installer Does Not Copy All Necessary Files

ID: Q98128

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, versions 2.0, 2.1, 2.1a, 2.2

SUMMARY

The Stacker 2.0 installer does not copy all essential .INI files to the boot volume. This has an impact on MS-DOS installations with LAN Manager and Windows for Workgroups 3.1 if they install NDIS drivers and use PROTMAN. You can work around this problem by copying *.INI from the C:\LANMAN.DOS directory on your stacked volume to the boot volume.

Steps for reproducing this problem are included at the end of this article.

SYMPTOMS

On the default Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1 configuration, the Stacker 2.0 installer fails to move all the necessary configuration files to the boot volume when stacking the hard drive.

CAUSE

PROTMAN reports a file open error, probably because it cannot find all the necessary .INI files in the path on the boot volume.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, copy *.INI from your C:\LANMAN.DOS directory on the stacked volume to the boot volume. PROTMAN then finds all the files it needs and proceeds as usual.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem. We are researching it and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Problem

This problem has been reproduced on two configurations:

  • PS/2 70 with DEC 210, NDIS, XNS, LAN Manager 2.1

  • Zenith notebook, Xircom, NDIS, NetBEUI, LAN Manager 2.1

  1. Install LAN Manager 2.1 (the production ship) using the NDIS interface for adapter card.

  2. LAN Manager should add this line to your configuration:

        DEVICE=C:\LANMAN.DOS\DRIVERS\PROTMAN\PROTMAN.DOS /i:C:\LANMAN.DOS
Note: PROTMAN looks for a PROTOCOL.INI file in the path pointed to in the argument C:\LANMAN.DOS.

  3. Install Stacker 2.0. Select Advanced Options to increase the size of the boot volume to at least 5 MB. Use default values for other options.

Note: Stacker moves/copies most of the files needed by CONFIG.SYS from C:\LANMAN.DOS to the boot volume but misses one or more .INI files. Stacker adds lines at end of CONFIG.SYS to mount the stacked volume and it automatically swaps drives.

  4. Reboot. PROTMAN reports a file open error, probably because it is looking for PROTOCOL.INI in the path on the boot volume.
