NET.ACC File on a BDC Often Smaller than PDC Counterpart

SUMMARY

The NET.ACC file on the backup domain controller (BDC) often is smaller than the NET.ACC on the primary domain controller (PDC) because of database storage techniques.

The NET.ACC is in database format and the BDC copy has the same data, but with fewer "holes" between active records, making it smaller. The size difference is usually only 10% and is nothing to worry about.

To demonstrate this you can delete the old NET.ACC, copy the NET.ACC from the distribution disks to the PDC, then promote another machine to PDC. Once the first machine is set up as a member, it does a full sync and produces an "optimally small" NET.ACC.

Note: Because ACLs on FAT volumes are also stored in the NET.ACC, Netlogon replication between HPFS servers and FAT servers also may result in a size difference.
