History of sizereqbuf Changes

SUMMARY

Sizereqbuf is the size in bytes for buffers that the server uses to take requests from workstations.

Sizreqbuf through the LAN Manager releases:


original LM 2.0, 2.0a      server=4k     DOS client=1k     OS/2 client=4k

LM 2.0b, LM 2.0c            server=1k     DOS client=1k     OS/2 client=4k

LM 2.1, 2.1a,2.2?           server=4k     DOS client=2k     OS/2 client=4k

To use memory more efficiently at the server and thus improve performance, 2.0b switched the server to 1k (smaller request buffers free up memory for caching). This switch was imposed because most clients use MS-DOS, not OS/2

For 2.1, performance tuning showed that bigger request buffers made for better performance. There was a limit to how big they could be made, because MS-DOS clients have limited conventional memory, so we changed the server back to 4k and changed the MS-DOS clients to 2k.

NOTE: The "LAN Manager Administrator Guide," version 2.1 lists the default on pg 454 as 1024.
