MAC Users/Can't Logon

ID: Q99309

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, version 2.1a
    on the following platforms: MACINTOSH

SYMPTOMS

There are 20 Macintosh users on a LAN Manager 2.1a network, running LMSFM 1.0. After about 10 Macintosh users logon, the remaining users attempt to mount the Mac volume without success. The message the users get is that they are disconnected. However, if one current user logs off, the unsuccessful user can then logon.

CAUSE

There may be an insufficient number of selectors. Selectors govern the maximum number of Macintosh workstations that can be connected to the server at one time--default 14. The selector value comes from the following formula: N/2+2 where N is the ma ximum number of Macs to be connected. The optimal maximum number of selectors to support approximately 40 Macintoshes is 35

The other reason this might happen is insufficient memory.

RESOLUTION

Not enough Selectors:

Check the number of selectors and increase them if necessary from the default setting in Protocol.ini.

See the "Services for Macintosh Administrator's Guide," pages 98-106 for examples, and further description of selectors parameter.

Insufficient memory:

On the HPFS386.IFS line in config.sys, allocate memory out of the CACHE:AUTO pool with the line /MSFM:1024 or /MSFM:2048.

NOTE: No more than 50 macs can be connected because of an OS/2 limitation of 53 threads per process
