Mirrored Partition Failure Unmirrors Other Partitions

ID: Q99959

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft LAN Manager, versions 2.0, 2.1, 2.1a, 2.2

SYMPTOMS

If any mirrored partition fails and has to be removed and replaced, then all other mirrored partitions are no longer mirrored at the next reboot of the server.

Symptoms depend on whether the master boot partition or a master extended partition failed. In both cases FTAdmin shows critical errors for all drives. If you chose "Correct" then "All errors on selected drive..." you are presented with either

  • master partition with no mirror...

  • or

  • mirror with no master partition...

These messages are correct and indicate the type of partition being repaired.

If the boot partition failed and you reboot with FTBOOT, the mirror of the master partition may show a phantom D: drive the same size as the real drive and the remaining drives (both masters and orphans) may have drive letters assigned.

If a non-boot partition failed, the master and orphaned partitions may not have drive letters assigned.

Other errors may also indicate that FTSETUP and FTAdmin are confused.

CAUSE

The cause is not known at this time.

RESOLUTION

Note: You don't have to stop the server process or be logged on as admin (or equivalent) to perform the following tasks.

Do not run FTSETUP. It may present a message saying that fault tolerance is partially installed and that you should shut down and reboot. If you do, the reboot will likely terminate abnormally with a Trap D or Trap C OS/2. If this happens, reboot with the HPFS recovery disk, copy the CONFIG.SYS off the boot drive, edit it as listed below, put the modified copy back on the server and reboot.

Remove the Fault Tolerant entries in CONFIG.SYS:

DEVICE=C:<lanman>\NETPROG\DISKFT.SYS
RUN=C:\<lanman>\NETPROG\FTMONIT.EXE
Do an orderly shutdown and reboot.

In the OS/2 File Manager:

  1. From the View menu, choose Include.

  2. Under File Flags, set the Hidden attribute to Show.

  3. Click on Set View.

  4. Double-click on the "C:\" icon.

Delete any of these files that you can locate:
FTCFG.DRV
FTCFG.SYS
FTPEND.SYS
FTPENDF.SYS
FTPENDCP.SYS
Note: You may have to remove the Hidden and System attributes:

  1. Highlight the file to be deleted.

  2. From the File menu choose Change Flags.

  3. Deselect the Hidden and System boxes.

  4. Choose Change.

Delete all erroneously orphaned partitions using FDISKPM--take care not to delete the mirror of the failed master. Do an orderly shutdown of the system and reboot.

FTSETUP should now work and you can use it to remirror the master partitions to their mirror drives.
