BUG: IIS 4.0 Fails When Using a UNC to Microsoft Access

The information in this article applies to:
  • ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), versions 1.5, 2.0
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server version 4.0


SYMPTOMS

When connecting to a remote Microsoft Access database under Internet Information Server 4.0 (IIS) using either a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) such as \\ComputerName\ShareName or a mapped drive, the following error may appear:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005' [Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access 97 Driver] The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '(unknown)'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data.


RESOLUTION

You may use the following to work around this problem:

  • Place the Microsoft Access .mdb file locally.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
