XCLN: Unable to Sort on Grouped Field

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Exchange Windows 3.x client, versions 4.0, 5.0

SYMPTOMS

When you view items that are grouped, Microsoft Exchange cannot sort on the Group key when you select it from the View menu and choose Sort. The following error message is displayed:

The sorting order could not be changed. You cannot sort on a property that you are using to group items by.

RESOLUTION

Choose the sort order from the Column Header bar by using the right mouse button to click the column you want to sort, then select either Sort Ascending or Sort Descending.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft Exchange version 4.0 Windows 3.x, Windows 95, and Windows NT clients. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
