XCLN: Err Msg: The Item Could Not Be Displayed

ID: Q147357

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Exchange Windows 3.x client, versions 4.0, 5.0
  • Microsoft Exchange Windows NT client, versions 4.0, 5.0
  • Microsoft Exchange Windows 95/98 client, versions 4.0, 5.0

SYMPTOMS

When you open a message using the Microsoft Exchange Client for Windows 3.x, Windows 95, or Windows NT, the following error message appears:

The item could not be displayed. You've exceeded the maximum amount of text.

CAUSE

You open, compose, or change a message that has a greater number of characters than 1,048,576 (0x100000 hex), the message body size limitation of Microsoft Exchange, version 4.0.

The above error message can also be received in the following cases:

  • There are problems loading or opening attachments.

Check for low disk space, because the client needs to save the attachments temporarily on the local machine.

  • The client computer is low on memory.

Close some applications and try the operation again.

WORKAROUND

  • Save the message in the Microsoft Exchange Viewer, by first selecting it, and then clicking Save As from the File menu.

  • Send large messages as attachments because each OLE object and file attachment counts as exactly one character only.
