XADM: Directory Won't Start if System Date Later Than 2038

Microsoft Exchange Server, versions 4.0, 5.0

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start the Microsoft Exchange Directory service, the following error message appears:

Could not start the Microsoft Exchange Directory service on \\servername.

Error 2140: An internal Windows NT error occurred.

CAUSE

The Directory service will not start if the system date is later than January 17, 2038.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server, versions 4.0 and 5.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
