XFOR: GP Fault Sending or Receiving SMTP Messages

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to send or receive a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) message through the Internet Mail Service, a general protection (GP) fault may occur, or you may experience other system instabilities. This problem occurs with messages that contain Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) content.

CAUSE

This behavior is the result of a problem in the component of the conversion engine that is responsible for converting HTML to Rich Text Format (RTF) and vice versa.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0.

A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5.
