XADM: Exchange Server 5.5 Online Defrag Does Not Run During Backup

SUMMARY

The online defragmentation schedule is controlled by the information store (IS) maintenance schedule. If online defragmentation does not complete by the end of the IS maintenance schedule, the current location is recorded and the next online defragmentation begins at this point.

Exchange Server 5.5 online defragmentation does not run during a backup session.

Due to a backup program running during the scheduled IS maintenance, it is possible that the online defragmentation process will never complete.

For large message stores, ensure that IS maintenance gets at least 5 hours per night that do not overlap with the backup schedule in order to finish its tasks.
