XCLN: Error Message: Synchronization with Offline Folder File Could Not Be Completed

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook Windows NT client, version 8.5
  • Microsoft Outlook Windows 95/98 client, version 8.5


SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Outlook 97 to Outlook 98, you may not be able to work offline with the offline folder (.ost) file. Also, synchronization of the .ost file with the Exchange Server computer may not finish, and one or more of the following error messages may be displayed:

The folder could not be synchronized.

Synchronization with offline folder file could not be completed.

Operation failed.


CAUSE

Outlook 98 Setup did not update the necessary files.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem:

  1. Rename all of the following files to *.old:


    • In the windir\System32 folder, the following Ems*.* files:


    • Emsabp32.dll
      Emsmdb.dll
      Emsui.dll
      Emsuix32.dll
    • In the windir\System32 folder, the following Mapi*.* files:


    • Mapisp32.exe
      Maip32.ol_
      Mapisvc.inf
      Mapi32.dll
      Mapisrvr.exe
      Mapi.dll
  2. Remove Outlook 98.


  3. Run Outlook 98 Setup again.
