XCLN Filename of PIF/LNK Attachment Changes

ID: Q217154

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook Windows 95/98 client, version 8.5
  • Microsoft Outlook Windows NT client, version 8.5

SYMPTOMS

When you compose a new message using Word as your e-mail editor in Microsoft Outlook, and insert a .pif or .lnk file, you may notice that the file that actually gets attached to the message changes from the .pif or .lnk file selected to the target file specified in the shortcut.

For example, if you insert a shortcut file that links to Setup.exe, Setup.exe will be embedded into the message instead of the shortcut.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design of the Microsoft Word editor.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the e-mail editor that Microsoft Outlook is using. To change the editor, follow these steps:

  1. In Outlook, on the Tools menu, click Options.

  2. Click the Mail Format tab.

  3. Select either HTML, Microsoft Outlook Rich Text, or Plain Text from the Send in this Message Format list.

Also, selecting the Link to File check box in the Insert File window will create a link to the selected file rather than embedding it.
