ID: Q220964

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Exchange Active Server Components, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Outlook Web Access, version 5.5
  • Microsoft Outlook Web Access, version 5.5 Service Packs 1, 2

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to log onto your mailbox using the Outlook Web Access (OWA) client, you may encounter the following error message after entering your logon name:

HTTP error 500 (-2891763)

CAUSE

This only occurs when NT Challenge Response is enabled in addition to Basic (Clear Text) in the Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) authentication methods, and only if IIS 2.0 was never installed. Installing IIS 3.0, then upgrading to IIS 4.0 will cause this error with OWA.

RESOLUTION

Remove IIS 4.0, then install IIS 2.0 from the Windows NT 4.0 Server CD, and upgrade it to IIS 3.0, then 4.0, depending upon your needs.

WORKAROUND

Disabling NT Challenge Response as an authentication method in IIS manager will prevent this error from being displayed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
